Sermon by Ps. Luke (17th October 2021)
We might be successful in our lives but is that the real measure of life?
We might be physically fit but are we spiritually fit as well?
We might be wonderful born-again Christians but does that make us spiritually fit?
Let us take some time and examine our lives to see if we are spiritually fit. I would like to check our spiritual life based on scientific definition of living beings which says that they need food, they breathe, move, grow, respond, reproduce, excrete and die. Based on the above-mentioned scientific criteria for life let us examine our lives as follows;
1. Do we feed on God’s Word?
Deuteronomy 8:3 “Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”
It doesn’t matter how many books we read or sermons we hear what actually matters is how much time do we personally spend in the Word of God, the Bible.
2. Do we breathe prayers to God our Maker?
Breathing is exchange of gases by inhaling Oxygen and exhaling Carbon dioxide. Do we breathe out our burdens to God in prayer?
Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
We need to pray without ceasing, are we doing it?
3. Do we move in Christian service?
Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
If we are spiritually fit, we will surely move around sharing the Gospel. Are we doing it?
4. Do we excrete the works of the flesh?
Colossians 3:8-10 “But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.”
5. Do we as spiritual Christians reproduce and give birth to spiritual children?1 Timothy 1:2 “To Timothy my true son in the faith”
Titus 1:4 “To Titus, my true son in our common faith”
6. Are we growing everyday into Christ?
Ephesians 4:13-15 “until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.”
For our own benefit, it is good to regularly check our spiritual life in the light of the above-mentioned spiritual checks. I would encourage each one of you all to rise above our own sweet comfort zones of idleness and be intentional in making ourselves spiritually fit and fulfil the purposes of God for which He has called each one of out to.
