A JOURNEY CALLED EXODUS – 74

COMMANDMENTS OF THE LORD – 4

Idol worship is prohibited by God. This is the second commandment of God. No one has seen God. He is a great and mighty God, and He cannot be made into a graven image. Basically, those who have encountered the true and living God would time and again say that it is even difficult to describe God in words; then how can you make an image, picture, or an idol of Him?

““You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.”
Exodus 20:4-6 NLT

The gravity of this command is even deeper. There is nothing in this world that can be compared to or replace God in our lives. It’s easy to say this on a Sunday morning, but living this confession every single day requires true commitment, because the curse of disobedience can fall upon four generations.

Israel was coming out of the land of Egypt, where they had witnessed idols and idol worship. The land they were heading to was also inhabited by people who practiced idol worship. However, God is a jealous God; He will not tolerate His glory being given to anyone else. There is a great blessing promised for obedience to this command for a thousand generations.

We have to make a choice and introspect our own lives, ensuring that absolutely nothing becomes more important than God

“Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’”
Mark 12:29-30 NLT

Amen 🙏
